The Methane to Markets Partnership
is now the Global Methane Initiative!
On 1 October 2010 thirty-eight governments including
India, the European Commission, the Asian Development
Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank
launched the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) to
urge stronger international action to fight climate
change while developing clean energy and stronger
economies.
GMI builds on the existing structure and success
of the Methane to Markets Partnership to reduce
emissions of methane, while enhancing and expanding
these efforts and encouraging new resource commitments
from country partners.
The goal of the Initiative is to reduce the methane
emissions in order to enhance economic growth, strengthen
energy security, improve air quality, improve industrial
safety and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.
Global Methane Initiative has the potential to achieve
emission reductions of more than 1.5 billion metric
tons of carbon dioxide equivalent about the
same as the annual emissions from more than 280
million cars.
FICCI
and the Global Methane Initiative
The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce
and Industry (FICCI) has been associated with
the Global Methane Initiative since 2006 and has
organised workshops and conferences under the
association. Currently FICCI is undertaking a
Project under the Global Methane Initiative -
Facilitating Mechanisms for Advancing Methane
Recovery and Use Projects in India under a United
States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)
grant. The project aims at reviewing existing
policies, creating awareness and building capacity
in India to facilitate methane recovery and use
in four sectors namely - landfills, coal mines,
agriculture and oil and natural gas systems. FICCI
is also a Project Network Member under this Initiative.
This
website is part of the FICCI-Methane to Markets Project and is designed, developed
and hosted as a central point for methane recovery and utilization projects and
activities in India.
